What is the practical challenge?

There is no longer a question of whether working towards sustainability needs to become the mainstream focus of local and global leaders, but rather how to face the challenge of making this happen. The leadership of many individuals towards a similar goal on a collective scale is needed. In our globalized world, innovation for sustainability is based on people’s ability to think together and to co-operate across sectors, nations and cultures. This means building committed teams of leaders, both within and beyond organizations. Different organizational cultures need to be integrated into joint initiatives and collaboration fostered between diverse stakeholders. Continue reading

7 Days in Almaty, Kazakhstan – Lost in Translation

“The airport transportation bus cannot come due to the weather conditions. Welcome to Almaty”.

As most of our travel destinations are rather tropical, due to the nature of the work we do, snow-covered airplanes and frozen runways are a rather unusual, even spectacular sight to us.

With or without airport transfer busses, we managed to get to the arrival hall, past the passport control and were warmly welcomed by our hotel pick-up. Those that “warned” us before our trip to Almaty about the icy temperatures in Kazakhstan weren‘t joking. The air is almost painfully cold, especially for someone coming from the rather modest winter we’d been having in Germany so far. Getting into the cab was the first challenge: my foot slipped when I attempted to get in the car – there was a layer of ice on the car floor. Continue reading
